KIM KEE Nasi Ayam Hailam sits comfortably in Ampang as an approachable Asian fusion restaurant that caters mostly to those craving a straightforward, no-frills chicken rice experience with a few Western twists on the side. Despite what the name suggests, this is a halal-friendly spot welcoming a diverse crowd, including many Malay diners, making it a practical choice for mixed groups or families who want an easy meal without fuss.

The restaurant’s vibe leans toward casual and unpretentious, with a modest interior that suits everyday meals rather than special occasions. It can get a bit slow during off-peak hours or weekends, as occasional reports of slow service suggest, so timing your visit—perhaps on a weekday evening—may lead to a smoother experience. Parking can be challenging around meal times, so if you’re driving, it’s wise to arrive early or consider alternative transport.

Much of its appeal lies in the chicken rice, presented in generous, recognizable cuts rather than small or flattened chicken pieces typical in some places. The rice itself feels reliable but won’t overpower with fragrance or complexity — it’s comfortable, familiar, and slightly above average in flavor. For those who want to mix it up, the menu includes hearty Western-style options like mashed potatoes, grilled chicken chops, and fish and chips, which have delighted diners looking for something beyond the usual.

This spot works well for casual, midweek dinners or a laid-back weekend lunch with friends or family. If you’re especially hungry, ordering portions with extra rice or double chicken can help you fill up without stretching the budget too far. While the food tends to be straightforward rather than adventurous, the balanced flavors and decent portions make it an accessible choice for locals who value familiarity and variety within one place.

Reach to the store around 3pm. Quite slow to serve my order. For me, rice nothing special not fragrant enough, but for chicken part I think it’s better than normal Chinese store, which they give u a real part of the chicken, not small piece of maybe breast meat then flatten it to look big in portion. Mostly Malay customers when I was there. Price for normal part of chicken rice is rm8.50 which worth to try.

One of my go-to spots for chicken rice. This is a chinese-style chicken rice. To be honest, nothing too extraordinary but everything on the plate is flavourful-ly balanced (?), if that makes sense. The taste is slightly above average but reliable. Nothing overpowering, just easy to enjoy. Portion-wise, i’d say average. If I’m extra hungry or trying to load up on protein, i usually go for double chicken. I also really like that it comes with taugeh on the side. Simple detail, but it makes a difference. Love that they serve halia too, big plus for me.

KIM KEE Nasi Ayam Hailam might sound like your typical Chinese-style eatery, but don’t let the name fool you — this place is fully halal and proudly caters to everyone, whether you’re Malay, Chinese, Indian, or anything in between. A smart and inclusive business move that’s clearly working well for them. While the name suggests Hainanese chicken rice as the star (and yes, it’s on the menu), the surprise is their wide variety, including Western dishes that give everyone at the table something to enjoy. My brother and I went for the Western grilled chicken — a real throwback to classic Malaysian-style “Western food,” complete with broccoli, corn, mashed potatoes, and carrots. It’s that local version of Western cuisine we grew up with — simple, comforting, and familiar. Not trying to be fancy, just good ol’ hearty fare. My brother raved about their Beef Wellington, which he tried with my niece on a previous visit. According to him, it was surprisingly superb — though I didn’t get to try it since I’ve stopped eating beef these days. Overall, KIM KEE is a down-to-earth spot for a satisfying meal with mates or family. Nothing pretentious, just thoughtful food that caters to every taste — and every community. A place that feeds both the stomach and the spirit.

During our first visit on Saturday night around 8 PM, my boyfriend and I discovered that the chicken rice was sold out. Instead, we ordered some Western food, which was really delicious and I loved the mashed potatoes! However, the downside was that the service was quite slow, and there were many empty tables stacked with dirty dishes. However, on my second visit with my family on weekdays, I could taste the nasi ayam and the service was not that slow compared to the first visit. Overall, I would love to come again for their nasi ayam and for the western cause its so good

We had dinner with family and really enjoyed the food. The quality was great, and the prices were reasonable. It’s a cozy spot for a casual meal with loved ones. Only downside—parking was a bit tricky to find, so plan ahead if you're driving.
